The 4% Formula
By Daniel Zolinski | May 28, 2024
“Am I hunting field mice or antelope?” This is a question Tim Ferriss often asks himself. If you don’t know who Tim Ferriss is, he is an American entrepreneur and investor who has grown in popularity from his 4-hour self help book. I didn’t understand what this question meant until I examined further. What does hunting have to do with hospitality, business, or entrepreneurship? A lion only needs to catch one antelope to have food for several days. Even if a lion is starving, it should never hunt mice. Why? A lion burns more calories hunting mice than it receives from eating them. What Tim Ferriss is saying is, “Is this task REALLY important?” We end up chasing insignificant pebbles – the field mice, rather than the larger opportunities – the antelope. We expend large amounts of energy and can’t enjoy the fruits of our labor. This is when I learned about the 4% Formula:
In the 19th century, Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto made a stunning observation. He noted that 20% of Italy’s population owned 80% of it’s land. This was true across multiple domains. Essentially, 80% of your results come down to 20% of your efforts. You can break this down further where some of the best leaders, entrepreneurs, and executives apply the 80/20 rule to the 80/20 rule. 80% of 80% is 64%. 20% of 20% is 4%. Your job remains the same:
- Identify your 4%.
- Systemize success.
- Watch the magic happen.
If a lion had a mentor telling him to implement the 4% Formula, he would spend all his time hunting antelopes. The lion will get DAYS worth of food from a few hours of hunting.
Sales
Focus on over-delivering on the key 4%. Build long-term relationships, find new ways to help guests, customers, and clients, and give them more attention. This results in more money, longer client retention, and fewer headaches. It’s a win-win-win.
Happiness
What does this look like for you? Personally, it’s quality time with friends and family, 7 hours of sleep, proper nutrition, and exercise. Spend more time doing things that make you happy, rather than things that don’t.
Hiring
Your top 4% of performers generate 64% of the impact. When hiring, look for weapons. Grit, optimism, willing to learn, fun to be around, and relentless resourceful. These are some great qualities to look for so you can build an exceptional team.
Experiences
4% of your experiences result in 64% of your growth. Identify these significant moments and create more of them.
As always, I hope you enjoyed this read. If you haven’t already tried implementing the 4% Formula, I highly suggest you do. You will begin to see your work-life balance rapidly change.
