Simplifying Your Hospitality Brand

By Daniel Zolinski | September 20, 2024

I have some favorite brands I’ve purchased products from, and I’ve noticed a similarity among them: simplicity.

Apple: “Think Different.”
Gymshark: “United We Sweat.”
Nike: “Just Do It.”

These slogans are effective because they are simple. They resonate due to their clarity. There are only two reasons why people don’t buy from you: they don’t want what you sell, or they don’t trust you. Simplicity addresses both issues. This is one reason Amazon is a powerhouse; it’s easy to navigate, and the buying process is straightforward.

Building an incredibly simple hospitality brand is deceptively challenging, but it boils down to three principles:

  1. Clarity
  2. Obsession
  3. Consistency

Read on to simplify your hospitality brand.

1. Clarity

The world is noisy. If your message isn’t clear, 90% of people won’t listen, and the 10% who do will quickly forget. Your message must be clear to cut through the digital clutter and capture your audience’s attention. Finding clarity isn’t a one-time task; it’s a process that evolves over time.

So how do you find clarity? The term “panning” for gold refers to using a pan to sift through dirt and rocks to find gold. Clarity works the same way; you must sift through distractions, gather feedback, pivot, and refine your hospitality message.

2. Obsession

Obsession is the secret ingredient to greatness. It’s not enough to have a clear message; you must share it with the world repeatedly. You need to be obsessed with your message, and if it’s not beautiful and clear enough to inspire that obsession, make it clearer.

What does obsession mean? It means you and your team go to lengths others might consider unnecessary or overkill. You won’t care what others think because you love what you’re doing, even when it’s challenging. Genuine obsession cannot be faked; your audience will know.

3. Consistency

Consistent messaging is like a farmer planting seeds. You don’t plant one seed and expect a bountiful harvest; you must plant many seeds, water them daily, and patiently wait for them to grow. Your message needs ongoing nurturing to take root in your audience’s consciousness.

Here are two practices to help:

  • Create foundational memos for important talking points:
    • Your story
    • Your brand story
    • Your movement
    • Your philosophy
    • The problems you solve
  • Create content checklists for your team. Keeping your messaging consistent can be difficult as your team grows. Ensure your team has a checklist to follow, including:
    • Persuasive methods
    • Proofreading

Lack of clarity, obsession, and consistency will undermine your hospitality brand. Stick to these three core principles, and watch simplicity shine through!
