The 6 Reasons Why People Don’t Buy from You (and How to Fix Them)

By Daniel Zolinski | October 1, 2024

One sales mistake that has cost me thousands of dollars was thinking that when a prospect started raising objections, it meant that I’d lost the sale. Objections aren’t a sign of failure – they are a natural part of a successful sales process. People are naturally resistant to change even when it’s in their best interest. When selling, you aren’t just battling other competition – you’re fighting against inertia.

The beautiful thing is you can win this battle by focusing on three critical elements:

  • Offer a high-quality, well-designed, simple solution.
  • Build trust through social proof and consistency.
  • Craft persuasive copy with clear calls-to-action.

Here, we’ll break down the 6 main reasons why people don’t buy and how to tackle each one.

Reason 1: Your Product Lacks Quality.

Quality is the ultimate pattern interrupt. The word is getting noisier with persuasive marketing getting harder and word of mouth becoming more important. You can’t fake word of mouth, so keep improving until they tell. If you’re friends, customers, and/or guests aren’t telling others without you telling them, it’s not good enough. Great products and services take time to build. Be patient.

Reason 2: Your Design Confuses Them.

Taste is the ultimate competitive advantage. If your company is a restaurant, your product is the meal, and your design is the interior. Great taste isn’t something you have, rather something you build. Whenever you come across a design that stuns you, save it and emulate it.

Reason 3: Your Offer is Too Complex.

If it’s too complex, people won’t get it. If they don’t get it, they won’t buy it. Boil your message down, make it crazy clear, and use simple words. Make it intriguing and simple enough that a stranger can’t say no.

Reason 4: You Don’t Show Enough Social Proof.

When you lead with your offer, people will ask, “Will this work for me?” When you lead with social proof, people will ask, “What’s your offer?” Show off happy customers, share success stories, and display outcomes. Gather testimonials and case studies like your life depends on it…because it does.

Reason 5: Your Brand is Inconsistent.

An inconsistent brand is like a book with each chapter written by a different author. The disjointed narrative makes readers lose interest. Your brand should be like a Michelan Star restaurant. How do you do this? Over-communicate with your creative team, have set brand guidelines your creatives and writers can follow, and have your product, design, and marketing teams work together.

Reason 6: Your Calls-to-Action Are Unclear.

Imagine yourself preparing to talk to a girl or guy at a social gathering. You fix your hair, stand up straight, and ask a friend how you look. Once you get the greenlight, you walk over and grab their attention. “Hi…umm…I just…umm…” Cringey to read, right? You can nail your product, marketing, and brand, but if your prospects don’t know what you want them to do, they won’t do it. Make a clear ask that makes doing something simple.
