Sage Hospitality Group Announced as Operating Partner of the Shinola Hotel in Detroit

November 2, 2023

DETROIT – Sage Hospitality Group was announced as the operating partner of downtown Detroit’s Shinola Hotel on Wednesday. Sage will oversee daily operations and management of the boutique property. Shinola Hotel joins the Sage Independent Hotel Collection, part of the company’s portfolio of more than 120 hotels, restaurants, and venues across 16 states and the District of Columbia.

“We are thrilled to add the iconic Shinola Hotel to our collection of independent, luxury lifestyle properties,” said Daniel del Olmo, president of hotels and restaurants at Sage. “It is exactly these types of groundbreaking properties that underscore our commitment to becoming America’s favorite lifestyle hospitality company.”

The 129-room Shinola Hotel has been featured as part of Travel + Leisure’s “500 Best Hotels in World” list and Conde Nast Traveler’s “Reader’s Choice Awards.” It celebrates an appreciation for timeless design like its namesake, Shinola, a Detroit-based luxury design brand. Accommodations include bespoke design by Gachot Studios and Kraemer Design Group such as handcrafted millwork, custom mattresses, and wallpaper inspired by patterns found during the renovation process. The property marries two restored buildings—the former T.B. Rayl & Co. sporting goods and hardware store and the Singer sewing-machine store—with three newly constructed buildings complementary to downtown Detroit’s historic architecture.

“Since 2019, Shinola Hotel has been a quintessential part of downtown Detroit’s hospitality experience, setting the highest bar for quality craftsmanship and exceptional service,” said Andrew Leber, vice president of hospitality for Bedrock, which owns the property. “As we turn the page and evolve to best serve our loyal clientele, we are confident that Sage Hospitality’s extensive industry expertise and operational excellence will help guide us into the future. We wish Mac&Lo the very best and thank them for their contributions to making Shinola Hotel what it is today.”

Shinola Hotel has six food and beverage concepts on-property from NoHo Hospitality and James Beard Award-winning chef Andrew Carmellini. Guests can indulge in a classic cocktail in the Living Room or the acclaimed Evening Bar, taste the authentic Southern Italian dishes at San Morello, or try the brews and Detroit-style fried chicken at The Brakeman and Penny Red’s. Additionally, the hotel boasts spacious special event venues such Bixby Hall and the Birdy Room for all sizes and types of meetings and occasions.

“As a result of this incoming transition, we are delighted to embark on a long-term strategic partnership with Bedrock, Shinola Hotel’s owner, as well as Bedrock Manufacturing, the parent company of Shinola,” said del Olmo. “Both groups are equally purpose-led and perfectly aligned with our core values. Our team is eager to bring our luxury lifestyle expertise to the property and create memorable experiences for our guests whilst delivering remarkable results for our partners. We very much look forward to what the future holds.”
