6 Proven Steps for Growing a Profitable Newsletter
By Daniel Zolinski | July 31, 2023
Email is one of the most profitable business assets in the world. 99% of users check their email every day. Some even check it up to 20 times a day! Further, most users have their email notifications turned on their smart phones, so they pop up as frequently as a text message on their home screen.
Amazingly, I think there is something even more powerful behind email. In contrast to social media, where people go to be entertained, people’s brains instantly turn into “transaction mode” when checking their inbox. They are typically handling something work related or checking out the latest deals from their favorite brands. Having a newsletter is crucial for growing your hospitality company to ensure you are “protected” from unsuspecting social media algorithm changes. In this article, I am going to share with you 6 proven steps that you can implement today to have a successful hospitality newsletter!
#1 Define Your Purpose (& Audience)
Before you start your newsletter, you need to have a clear purpose behind why you are starting it in the first place. Without a clear objective in mind, it will be difficult to add extreme value and provide the right content to your audience. Ask yourself questions like…
- Why am I starting this newsletter?
- What does my audience want?
- What is my objective?
The better you understand your audience, the more tailored and relevant your content will be.
#2 Determine Your Content & Sending Strategy
Your content will revolve around the type, format, and frequency in which you send it out. Do you want to provide shorter, daily emails to provide hospitality updates for your restaurant or hotel? Do you want to send out weekly roundups on the hottest trends in the hospitality industry? The fun part is YOU get to determine the strategy. Once you make your decision, be sure to stay consistent with your frequency. The more consistent you are the more reliable and professional you become.
#3 Choosing the Right Platform
There are many different platforms you can use to stay consistent in your newsletter pursuits. Do thorough research on what platform works best for your company situation. As you grow your newsletter, some platforms will provide better tools to meet your needs. I personally use ConvertKit, but there are others such as Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign, or Klaviyo.
#4 Grow Your Email List
If you’re trying to grow your email list, it’s important to have a clear path for visitors to subscribe. Add your landing page link to all your social media bios and have a call to action in your social media posts. In addition, have some type of lead magnet that incentivizes more people to subscribe. This could include a giveaway, template, free course, or anything else your audience might find valuable.
#5 Write Engaging Content
The key to consistently growing your hospitality newsletter and retaining subscribers is to constantly add high value content. Determine your email theme, leverage storytelling, nail your subject line, and cultivate your community.
#6 Monetization Strategies
The reason people are reading your newsletter is because they already like your content and have a high level of trust in you. Trust is what makes selling the easy part. Don’t be afraid to promote your current and new products. People will be willing to pay when you consistently provide high value content, products, and services. Sponsorships are another great way to promote another hospitality companies’ products or services that align with your audiences’ interests.
Phew! I know that’s a lot to take in. Understand that if you implement these steps, you are sure to see great success in your hospitality newsletter. Comment below with any other questions you may have. I look forward to seeing your growth!
