Swire Hotels (including The Opposite House and EAST, Beijing; The Upper House and EAST, Hong Kong) will participate in Earth Hour 2013, a global effort encouraging businesses, governments and individuals to develop sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. At 8:30 p.m., March 23, 2013, each of the Swire hotels will turn off selective lights to include decorative, façade and back office lighting. Guests will be informed of the initiative via iPad®, iPod touch® and TVs and also by the Guest Experience Teams.

Earth Hour is a global event that has grown from one city in 2007 to 6950 cities in 152 countries last year (www.earthhour.org.) Created by 'people for the planet,' the impact of this event has gone beyond one hour and now symbolizes what can happen when the world acts together. Despite its grassroots origins, celebs from Jessica Alba and Therese Kerr to Bollywood and Asia-Pop stars are also big supporters of Earth Hour.

“Earth Hour has been a fun way to get our staff and guests involved in the health of our planet,” said Brian Williams, managing director of Swire Hotels. “Swire Hotels has given great consideration to the preferences of our guests and the effect our practices have on the environment. We are committed to ongoing sustainable environmental practices and by utilizing the most up to date technology, our guests are able to reduce our carbon footprint while enhancing their luxury travel experience.”

Swire Hotels has been committed to developing sustainable and environmentally friendly hotels in an economically and socially responsible way since its inception. Beyond Earth Hour, Swire hotels are as paperless as possible, having taken environmental measures in the daily operations of the hotels including Paperless check-in/out and iPad®, iPod touch® or TV in every room replacing printed hotel directories. There is also the use of energy saving Lexus RX450H hybrid cars at The Upper House, daily e-newspaper upload on iPod touch® at EAST, Hong Kong and iPad® at The Opposite House .
