Continuing its ongoing evolution as a lifestyle hotel company, Dream Hotel Group is poised to move its luxury Chatwal brand out to the country with its first-ever Lodge property now officially underway in the Catskills.

The New York-based hotel brand and management company broke ground earlier this month on The Chatwal Lodge, which is expected to open in the Spring of 2020 in Bethel, NY. Dream Hotel Group has 18 hotels currently open and some 20 properties in development globally, including the The Chatwal San Miguel de Allende, slated to open in 2020, and The Chatwal Maaga Maldives, which is slated to open in 2021.

Jay Stein, CEO, Dream Hotel Group, acknowledged the most recent atypical project represents a bit of a departure and possibly a new direction for the company going forward. “It is entirely different from any other project that Dream Hotel Group has developed or managed, but certainly not our last,” he said.

Stein also commented on what he sees as the uniqueness of the property in terms of the competitive set, or lack thereof, in the region and its potential impact. “The Chatwal Lodge is a 5-star luxury retreat and unlike anything else in the area. When open, The Chatwal Lodge will be a driving force in the ongoing restoration and revitalization of New York's famed Catskill Mountains,” he said.

The lodge is being built on The Chapin Estate, which is located along the shores of Sullivan County’s two largest lakes. Stein further explained why the Catskills represented the ideal destination for such a project while shedding some light on how it came to fruition.

The CEO noted that Sant Singh Chatwal--the Chairman of Dream Hotel Group for whom the brand is named--a few years ago shared a brochure on The Chapin Estate with Ashish Verma, vp, operations, luxury division of Dream Hotel Group, and the decision was made.

“Many people may wonder why we would choose such a location for The Chatwal Lodge but Mr. Chatwal knew that we had the opportunity to bring something unique and special to consumers,” said Stein, later adding, “they both knew that this would be ideal for the Chatwal brand’s first country enterprise.”

Stein further elaborated on some of the area’s more obvious demand generators. “The Catskills and Sullivan County have seen an increasing number of visitors due to its vast recreational activities, as well as growing arts and culture community,” he said.

Designed by Nunzio Marc Desantis Architects, the Lodge will be “rustic and refined.” The company further elaborated on the design of the property, noting “The Chatwal Lodge offers an elegant and charming play of details literally carved straight out of the woods from which it stands. The luxurious hideaway features hand-hewn timbers, oversized stone fireplaces and mighty trunks of 40-foot white pine trees towering from floor to ceiling in the Main Lodge. Luxurious meeting and event venues located at water's edge are ideal for corporate retreats, social events and lavish destination weddings. Harmonizing with nature, its serene spa offerings will also include some of the most desirable wellness services.”

In addition, the complex will include 34 luxury villas with 50 total rooms. The rooms will be spread among accommodations, such as eight one- and two-bedroom luxury cabins; three or four glamour-camping tents; a guest home with a presidential suite, and a handful of large, ultra-luxe glass roofed treehouses. The property also will include “world-class, farm-to-table culinary experiences” by DUCASSE Paris, founded by multi-Michelin-starred chef Alain Ducasse, according to the company.

The opening of The Chatwal Lodge is part of a larger economic development plan for the town of Bethel, which is just 90 miles from Manhattan. Stein highlighted the importance of the project as it relates to the region.

“We've created something that will lift the heart and soul of the community for years to come. The Chatwal Lodge is expected to generate tax revenue and create new jobs before and after construction, while also offering the growing residential and business communities a new reason to work and play in the countryside destination. The new tourists and visitors that will come to Bethel will also bring new commerce and better economic opportunity for all the businesses already located here,” he said.
