Wisecracker Design, the interior and product design agency based in Sonoma County, recently completed a major interior renovation for The Hyatt Regency in Merida, Mexico. The extensive redesign of the public areas included the lobby, two restaurants, ballrooms and pre-event spaces and pool terrace, moving the property forward by replacing a hodgepodge of 1990s faux European ideas with a thoughtful design relevant to modern travelers.

Lead designers and co-owners of Wisecracker Jim Neeley and David Dow succeeded with a tight budget and even tighter deadline by using smart high/low creative solutions, working closely with national vendors and artisans from around the country; and completing the project in less than a year and a half.

“Our challenge and opportunity was to re-energize the 20-year property and bring the buzz back to the hotel,” said Neeley. “Now on any given night the lobby is busy with the next generation of style-conscious business travelers and the new restaurant is filled with guests and food-savvy locals who have a reason to go back to the Hyatt.”

Added Dow, “Mission accomplished.”

Key features of the renovation are the installation of a new lobby bar, an intimate gathering space called The Library; Amuza, a new restaurant concept and a careful facelift to another on-site traditional restaurant – with much thought in keeping long-time guests loyal. Wisecracker designed many custom pieces for the project: hammered copper table tops from Santa Clara de Cobre in Michoacán, handmade tiles crafted in the Yucatan for walls and trompe l’oeil area rugs, and Travelling Light, a suspended luggage sculpture made from trunks hand-built in Mexico.

Wisecracker did the planning, design, purchasing, installation, and logistics including export; overseeing the entire project on-site in collaboration with their partners in Mexico, Arteuropeo, the Hyatt Regency and renovation architect Mario Heredia.
