Dorothy Dowling, senior vice president of marketing and sales for Best Western International, was recently named to the 2014 Direct Marketing News Marketing Hall of Femme, joining an exclusive group of the marketing industry’s most powerful marketing leaders. Dowling was inducted to the Marketing Hall of Femme’s 2014 class along with marketing heads from brands including American Red Cross, Dell Inc., the National Hockey League, and The Home Depot, among others.

Dowling is a widely respected travel industry leader known for her breadth of experience, boundless energy and passion for all things marketing. For nine years, she has been a driving force in contemporizing the 68-year old Best Western brand. As The World’s Largest Hotel Chain®, Dowling’s efforts at Best Western have earned international praise for innovative marketing and social media leadership.

During Dowling’s tenure, Best Western introduced its Descriptor Program, which established three distinct hotel types and more than quadrupled enrollments for the brand’s loyalty program; Dowling has also enhanced Best Western’s strategic partnerships with travel brands like AAA and Trip Advisor, while pushing the envelope in digital strategy through cultivating new relationships with technology leaders such as Facebook and Google.

“I’ve always tried to view the world through the customers’ lens, and I’m honored to be recognized with an outstanding group of women innovators who are helping shape the future of marketing,” said Dorothy Dowling, senior vice president of marketing and sales for Best Western International. “I’ve had good fortune and wonderful mentors who, along with a lot of hard work, contributed greatly to my success. Relationships are the currency of life, and I believe we always have to be students of the game, learning from our customers and partners to ensure our thinking is on track and responsive to the voice of the customer.”

Dowling was named vice president of the Global Business Travel Association Allied Leadership Council in 2013. She also serves on the North American board for the U.S. Travel Association and is a member of the American Society of Travel Agents’ Allied Marketing Council. Dowling currently serves on, and is the former chair of, the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International (HSMAI) Americas Board and is past president of HSMAI Canada.

Dowling was named to the 2014 Direct Marketing News Marketing Hall of Femme during a festive awards ceremony on March 21, which included a half day of education and a panel discussion on how to succeed. This is the second year that Direct Marketing News has inducted members into its Hall of Femme; last year’s inaugural class included leaders from IKEA, Macy’s, DreamWorks Animation and General Electric.
