General Manager Kai Fischer welcomed a capacity crowd to the Hilton Westchester and expressed his appreciation for the support demonstrated at the launch of the Veterans Career Mentoring Program sponsored by The Westchester Bank. The first of its kind in the United States, this program took place as the drawdown of US military forces in Afghanistan is schedule to begin later this year.

John Tolomer, President & CEO of The Westchester Bank, expressed total support of the program by saying, “We’re doing this because we owe them.” Nearly 40 local small businesses volunteered to mentor more than 60 veterans who attended the invitation-only event at The Hilton Westchester.

Mr. Fischer noted that Hilton Westchester was also a participant in the event. Hilton Worldwide lunched Operation: Opportunity in support of US military veterans and their families, including the hiring of 10,000 vets at the company in the next five years and to donate millions of Hilton HHonor points that veterans can redeem for free hotel stays. Fisher went on to announce that “we are reaching out to our community of veterans and will be hiring at least one veteran to work here at Hilton Westchester. It is my hope”, continued Fischer, “that we are just the first of many who will make a similar commitment to these heroes.”

Keynote speaker, Duncan Neiderauer, CEO of the New York Stock Exchange addressed the crowd noting that small business creates two out of every three jobs in the U.S. and praised The Westchester Bank and Hilton Westchester for their support and commitment to these veterans and the talent they can bring to the workplace.

Mr. Neiderauer spearheaded a veterans outreach program at the NYSE that includes one-on-one mentoring, a ten-week internship, and a one-day symposium to train senior executives, human resource professionals and hiring managers in how to translate military training/resumes into civilian job opportunities. The NYSE program is in its third year and has demonstrated its viability by nearly doubling in size each year.
