The future of technology is playing out today in Hotel Lucia. An interactive wall has been developed by Intel Labs, based in Oregon, powered by an InFocus projector, and installed in the lobby of Hotel Lucia so hotel guests and visitors to Portland can interact with photography posted to Instagram.

Dubbed #LuciaWallPDX, the installation has transformed a wall in Hotel Lucia’s lobby into a massive touch screen that displays images posted to Instagram and creates the opportunity for visitors to the hotel to interact with the photos by tagging them with emotions. A natural extension of Hotel Lucia’s existing art collection, which includes the world’s largest installation of black and white photography by Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist, David Hume Kennerly, this new Intel Labs installation transforms social media photography, today’s photojournalism of the masses, into an interactive work of art.

#LuciaWallPDX was created by a group of researchers and designers in Intel Labs whose vision is to create an immersive experience to help enrich people’s lives. Evoking the futuristic, interactive screens featured in countless science fiction films, the #LuciaWallPDX installation is the first time this technology has been permanently displayed. It combines custom developed Intel Labs software with optical sensors and an InFocus projector to continuously pull images from Instagram and display them in a beautiful nine foot by five foot collage. Viewers can sweep through photos, select and enlarge them, and express their emotional responses to photos on an interactive mood map. The result is a constantly-evolving work of art created by Intel Labs, and the many guests of Hotel Lucia who share and express their responses to Instagram images by engaging with #LuciaWallPDX.

Local residents, hotel guests and travelers to Portland are invited to drop by Hotel Lucia, experience the technology themselves and to post photos to Instagram using the #LuciaWallPDX hash tag so they will appear on the wall at Hotel Lucia.
