Garden Court Hotel, an upscale, boutique hotel in Downtown Palo Alto, today announced the appointment of Clive Berkman as Executive Chef. Berkman brings more than two decades of culinary expertise to his new role, where he will oversee Garden Court Hotel’s food and beverage program, including in-room dining and event services.

“We are excited to welcome Chef Berkman to Garden Court Hotel and the Downtown Palo Alto community,” said Barbara Gross, general manager of Garden Court Hotel. “His dedication to non-profit events, along with Clive’s creativity and passion for using local and green farmed ingredients make him the perfect match. His addition to our team allows us to add complexity to our menus, flexibility to create menu and beverage excursion packages and provide our guests with customized and over the top dining experiences.”

As a native of Johannesburg, South Africa, Berkman’s eclectic international style is influenced by his years of culinary training throughout Europe and greater US cities including New York, Miami, New Orleans, Houston and San Francisco. Clive was at the helm of Charley’s 517 in Houston, Texas and later his own restaurant, Clive’s, also in Huston. While there, he taught at the University of Houston Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management. Berkman also continues to speak on influential food panels and at cooking demonstrations throughout the United States.

Berkman scours California’s rich and abundant farmers markets and visits local producers applying his European culinary background and passion for clean and unique ingredients. He has created exciting in-room dining options for guests and new catering menus designed to accommodate the diverse range of special events, meetings and weddings that take place at Garden Court Hotel. Special welcome amenities now include homemade truffles from his mother’s recipe. Signature dishes include Pinot Noir and cherry jam, made from local cherries, on a toasted Jarlsberg and Brioche crostini, a decadent Lobster Mac-N-Cheese and Hummus pockets that crunch into a melding of hummus, avocado and mango.
