As the first Chicago hotel to receive an ENERGY STAR rating, as well as a silver certification from Green Seal and StayGreen recognition from the Illinois Hotel and Lodging Association, the InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile continues its green efforts as one of 14 buildings in Chicago by joining Mayor Rahm Emanuel's Retrofit efforts for energy efficiency.
The historic Michigan Avenue hotel is pleased to participate in the citywide initiative, which will create more than 1,000 jobs for Chicagoans, while achieving an energy cost savings of $5 million for each building.
"Being "green" and supporting the environment has been an important initiative for our property from day one," says General Manager Raymond Vermolen. "We're honored to join Mayor Emanuel's efforts as another extension of our commitment."
As part of the Retrofit program, the 83-year-old property has promised to make several energy-efficient adjustments over the coming weeks, which include:
• Retrofitting the light fixtures in the parking garage and placing lights on motion sensors to reduce energy
• Installing LED lights throughout the property, where possible
• Upgrading the Building Automation System
• Enrolling in the ComEd Monitoring Based Commissioning program
• Improving cooling tower efficiency
• Piping insulation survey
Other possible initiatives for the property also include creating a green roof on the main tower and installing solar thermal panels to heat hotel water.
