San Francisco-based Warren Sheets Interior Design, Inc. (WSD) will spearhead the renovation of the Grande Colonial Hotel – La Jolla, Calif.’s oldest original hotel and a member of the Historic Hotels of America, the National Trust for Historic Preservation's prestigious seal of approval.

According to Warren Sheets, principal of WSD, his firm will begin improvements to public spaces, including the entrance lobby, the lobby lounge and meeting rooms of the landmark, five-story property in mid-December. The renovation is being held in anticipation of the hotel’s 2013 centennial celebration, and slated for completion in January 2012.

Taking a cue from the still intact Colonial Revival-style, turn-of-the-century architecture, Sheets and his partner Sharon Regan will redo the 1913 hotel in a classic European residential style – juxtaposed with subtle contemporary nuances. “The updated design can be described as new traditionalism,” Sheets explained. “Our goal was to create clean, classic designs to meet the needs of today’s travelers.”

The sophisticated new décor will carefully preserve the boutique hotel’s enduring historic appeal, while infusing modern elements such as bold shades of azure and Mediterranean blue, accompanied by warm golds accented with white, platinum and bronze to echo the hotel’s oceanfront locale. Elegant Giallo Royale and Calcutta White polished marble, as well as black Galaxy granite flooring, will provide a compelling backdrop for fine accessories and handsome furnishings, including antique reproductions and contemporary pieces. Original Colonial Georgian-style arches welcome guests into the lobby, accentuated by large columns clad in detailed millwork with antique mirrored insets, adding a touch of glamour – and paying homage to the hotel’s star-studded past. Additional interior highlights will include intricate hand-stenciling adorning the lobby lounge ceiling, rich textured fabrics, elegant traditional chandeliers and walls upholstered in crème brûlée-colored linen weave fabric.
